How to make your own green cleaning products

Run out of detergent and need a quick fix? Or looking for some quick and easy homemade chemical-free cleaning solutions rather than buying expensive ‘green’ products? Then look no further!

Below are three easy, cheap and effective recipes to help you create your own green cleaning products to use at home:

• Streak-free glass and window cleaner

2 cups warm water
¼ cup of distilled vinegar/rubbing alcohol
1 tablespoon of cornstarch

• Essential oil toilet cleaner

¾ cup of white/distilled vinegar
¾ cup of bicarb
10 drops each of lavender and tea tree oils

• De-greasing surface cleaner

1 teaspoon bicarb
¼ cup white/distilled vinegar
½ lemon
1 litre hot water

Using distilled vinegar prevents that ‘chip shop’ smell and helps to soften hard water so there’s no film/residue left behind.

A fast way to give any product anti-bacterial properties is to add essential oils like tea tree, sage, rosemary and lavender – they also add a lovely fresh smell. Just be sure check that they won’t cause skin reactions or damage surfaces first.
